Planning Application Refused
Many residents will be delighted
that the planning application
for the extensive area of
Land Rear of 6 To 108 Mell Road Tollesbury Essex
was refused on Friday August 19th 2016
by the Maldon Planning Authorities.
The plan was to change of use
from agricultural land to equestrian,
the erection of a stable block
with associated hard standing, fencing,
vehicular access and access track.
There was widely held suspicion that
this was a precursor of a later application
for extensive housing development.
The land currently consists of two fields
used for agricultural production
traversed by a footpath
bounded on the Southern side
by a densely populated hedgerow
with a substantial number of trees.
A dormouse survey is in process.
Tollesbury Parish Council recommended
refusal of the application.

Landline Superfast (Fibre) Broadband
Good News!
Superfast Landline Fibre Broadband is now available in Tollesbury.
Note that it is likely to be necessary to contact your service provider,
for a new router to be provided,
and for an extra longer term cost of say £5 - £10 per month,
and for a new agreement to stay with the provider for at least a fixed length of time, e.g. a year or 18 months.
It is quite likely that if you access your account via the internet then the information and means to upgrade will be prominently displayed. The service provider probably already knows fibre broadband has been enabled.
Note: BT Openreach is fenced-off from the BT Consumer Division and by law has to provide equal access to all providers (e.g.TalkTalk)
The current Broadband speed without fibre is about 2 Mb/Sec.
With Fibre this increases to 30 – 40 Mb/Sec (Mb – Megabits , i.e. 1 million bits )

After about 15 years New Brunswick Scientific (originally DJM Research) is moving to Maldon, to be known as Eppendorf Cryotech Ltd. This follows the recent departure of Servowatch also to Maldon recently.
In 1999, NBS acquired DJM Cryo Research of Tollesbury England, exclusive manufacturers of New Brunswick Scientific's Ultra-Low Temperature Innova and Premium freezers, which at the time have been European market leaders for nearly 20 years. Freezer distribution is expanded worldwide.

BT Openreach
Tollesbury Service
There was a fault between the afternoon of Thursday August 28 and the morning of Tuesday September 2.
This meant that there was no broadband service reliant on the BT Openreach network.
The normal phone service was unaffected.
This did not only affect the BT broadband service but also all the other Internet Service Providers essentially reliant on the BT Openreach network.
This is extremely serious.
To all intents and purposes broadband is now an essential service.
BT Openreach is a separate entity from BT Phone and has a monopoly in providing the landline network for all internet service providers using landline connections.
The landline network is essentially the phone equivalent of Rail Track for the Railways.
Amazingly Telecoms provider customers who have problems cannot directly contact Openreach and have to go indirectly through their reseller.

Radio Caroline (of 1960’s Pirate Radio Fame) has moored in the Blackwater opposite Tollesbury.
"Radio Caroline is a British radio station founded in 1964 by Ronan O'Rahilly to circumvent the record companies' control of popular music broadcasting in the United Kingdom and the BBC's radio broadcasting monopoly. Unlicensed by any government for most of its early life, it was a pirate radio station which only became formally illegal in 1967.
The Radio Caroline name was used to broadcast from international waters, using five different ships owned by three different owners, from 1964 to 1990, and via satellite from 1998 to 2013. Radio Caroline currently broadcasts 24 hours a day via the Internet and by occasional Restricted Service Licence. Radio Caroline broadcasts music from the 1960s to contemporary, with an emphasis on album-oriented rock (AOR). The company also licenses other stations around the world to use the Radio Caroline name."

Superfast Broadband Explained by Winstred Parish Council
"Like many rural communities, we have had to rely on old copper and aluminium networks of telegraph wires for internet connection. The capacity of these wires is not sufficient for us all to have the speed of internet connection we desire and because our villages are spread over a wide area, those people furthest from the telephone exchange often cannot receive any signal at all. (Distance degrades the signal strength). It is unlikely that this will change. That our telephone exchange will be upgraded and our many miles of village roads will be dug up to replace our copper wire network with fast fibre optic cable now used for fast urban internet connection. It is just not economic for Internet Providers to invest in our villages. We do not have enough houses per mile of cable laid to make it worth their while. There are some plans to connect villages with optic fibre paid for by government grants but there is no certainty of this and the limits on speed will probably be circa 12Mbs, not Superfast.
In our villages we are going to get a Superfast Internet connection. This ranges to 64Mbs which typically is only available in the UK's super connected cities. It is capable of running Skype, TV, feature films etc. Our new internet connection to homes will be wireless rather than cable. Around the world wireless is a proven method of connection. Our network will use hardware manufactured by Motorola and will be paid for by a £60,000 grant from Abberton Reservoir Community Fund, which was secured by our villages Parish Council.
About 40 villages in East Anglia already have this technology. Locally this includes West Bergholt, Aldham and Eight Ash Green, which is supplied by Aldham based County Broadband, who are Colchester Borough Councils chosen partner. Our internet supply will be come into our villages via a receiver on the top of Peldon Church tower, households will receive the signal via an aerial probably positioned on their TV antenna. Many of these aerials will also relay the signal to neighbours, so forming the network. Our villages have been carefully surveyed and the network planned to ensure maximum coverage. ....."
